writing mode…

i’m finding it very hard to get into ‘writing mode’ today! to be fair…i always find it hard to get into ‘writing mode’ when i’m writing a formal piece of work!! i could chat away on facebook chat or write a blog any day, or write in my journal and just waffle my life away…but when it comes to writing about specific things, using references and  making it make sense first time round without writing something down…writing about more then changing my mind but leaving it all in the paragraph or whatever…hardtimes!!!

anyway…my aim today is to write a good solid 1000 (out of 10000) words!! ive got 283 so far!! better than nothing!! i jut thought id take a wee break and blog for a minute!! it is always when i have work todo or lse its the holidays and ive nothing to do that i log most…so watch this space!! with my dissertation to write and a musicology essay to write all for around the 12th january…i might be cloggin my frustrations a lot!! we’ll see!!

procrastinating again!

I have an essay due for next friday worth 50% of a module of final year…this concept does not sit well with me. This is the first essay I’ve written for uni that has ever ‘mattered’ – mattered in the sense that is counts towards my degree – and I am finding it increasingly difficult to get into the way of writing it. The other annoying thing is that the word limit is 2500! This is not very much…and so it is very hard to condense it down and make it all relevant with out it missing vital pieces of information that are crucial to the overall meaning of the essay.

here is the question:

Ted Gioia in his book ‘The History of Jazz’ has commented that ‘ the rise of a more overt modernism in the early 1940s should not be viewed as an abrupt shift, as a major discontinuity in the music’s history. it was simply an extension of jazz’s inherent tendency to mutate, to change, to grow!’
Discuss this comment with reference to the music and players of the time.

For a start, it takes me to read this question six or seven times before I can even comprehend what it is asking me! Secondly, what even is overt modernism…ok so I know that it means really in your face modern things, but really do I care?! Actually I do! I am enjoying reading about Jazz (even though I have done my fair share of complaining about it!) and  getting my teeth into the essay and discussing the the statement, which I do agree with by the way! I just wanted to write a little blog to type something that isn’t to do with Jazz, even though this whole entry so far as been Jazz related!! AHH!

This has been a strange week! I don’t feel like I’ve done very much or something! Even though, I sort of have! Just not much uni-related work! Which is starting to irritate me! When I think back to last year, especially this time last year, I hadn’t done a single thing uni-related and back then that didn’t phase me in the slightest! It didn’t count, so it didn’t matter…or so I thought! Now I have realised that even though it doesn’t count towards my degree specification certainly doesn’t mean that it doesn’t matter! It’s all about experience! Getting the experience of meeting deadlines (which I always did meet!) but also getting the experience of essay writing and researching etc…last year, I did the bear minimum to get by!

But this year, not doing work in a day really agitates me! Pretty much because I am so conscious of that fact that my entire degree rides on this year! BOKE! and so naturally my attitude is going to be different, and I guess I’m glad and thankful that it is and that I’m actually being productive (where possible!) with my time!

Anyway, these are the thoughts consuming greensleeves head today!…now back to Bebop!

motivation…or lack there of!

All morning…most of the day, infact, pretty much all summer…I have been sitting staring at my flute and asking myself…’Louise, why are you not practicing?!’ (I have found myself literally saying this out loud ha!!) Answer…’I cant be bothered!!’ Isn’t that just an easy answer? I’m going to go back to uni and have to start pieces from scratch when I have had 2 months to get some pieces started!! I hate my lack of motivation! Aw well!! I also haven’t practiced because I’ve become slightly obsessed with daytime tv…more specifically…housey programmes! I NEVER used to watch daytime tv…well..very rarely! but now that I am stuck in thew house while workmen take over and rip out radiators left, right and centre…i have no choice but to watch tv..awwww!! actually…i’m getting bored of it!! part of the reason why I started a blog too…to give me something else to occupy myself!

I have however enjoyed playing with my new camera…and my flute! At least its been out of its case…thats always a start!! you’d think seeing artsy photos of my flute would make me want to play it…but still…no…no motivation whatsoever!!

Good intentions are always hard to follow through!! I have also decided what I’m gonna do for my dissertation…but have I done any research for it yet?! Do I need to answer this?! here’s a clue as to what its about…

Final year…stress…because this is the only year that counts…2 years of dossin about…now the work begins…ok so it should have already begun…but hey…where’s the fun in that?! its all about all-nighters kebabs and coffee breaks! roll on 3rd year!
